Baksı Dance

A practice of sound and movement drawn from the Central Asian Baksı tradition.

Five stages of a figure rising from the ground, lifting the arms and turning, with a dombra and a copper bowl of water beside it. Watercolour atlas plate.
Plate V · Baksı Dance

Baksı Dance follows a sequence of movements accompanied by dombra, kıl kopuz, şangobız and the sound of water. Connecting with the ground at the beginning and end is its central moment.

The sequence unfolds in stages: ground, arms, shoulders, head and return. Movement rises from the ground to the head, then retraces its path down to the ground.

These practices are for personal awareness and do not replace medical assessment. Before joining, read the “Before you join” section on the School page.

In Kazakh and Kyrgyz tradition, Baksı refers to a poet and traditional ritual practitioner who leads ceremonies with the kopuz and dombra. Over time, the tradition became intertwined with Islam.
